Spiti Valley is UNESCO designated India’s first Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve (a protected region under Man and the Biosphere Programme) located in the rain shadow region of the Greater Himalayan ranges. It is snuggled up in the north-eastern part of Himachal Pradesh.

Starting from Chandigarh, the Spiti Valley Circuit route winds counterclockwise through Solan, Shimla, Narkanda, Rampur Bushahr, Sarahan, Chitkul, Kalpa, Nako, Tabo, and Kaza on National Highway 5 (NH5) and its peripherals.

To close the loop, the circuit follows the Spiti River, crosses Kunzum Pass, and meets the Chandrabhaga near Batal. From there it passes through the Atal/Rohtang Tunnel and Manali, before the 266 km Manali–Chandigarh section of National Highway 3 completes the full circuit.

Wake up in Nako to sunrise views over the still lake and surrounding peaks — one of the most peaceful mornings before venturing deeper into Spiti Valley.
Visit Nako Monastery and its ancient cluster of mud-brick temples near the lake, believed to be over 1,000 years old and home to rare Kashmiri-style Buddhist paintings.
Drive through the Pin Valley corridor, passing dramatic gorges, ancient fossils embedded in roadside cliffs, and semi-nomadic villages frozen in time.
Stop at Gue Monastery to witness the famous 500-year-old mummy.

For your Day 5 circuit from Kaza, plan to start early to navigate the steep ascent toward the “Roof of the World,” beginning with the stunning village of Langza, where you can admire the iconic golden Buddha statue and explore the ancient monastery against the backdrop of the Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak. From there, continue to the remote and wind-swept village of Komic, home to the historic Tangyud Monastery and the world’s highest café, before descending to Hikkim to visit the world’s highest post office, where you can mail a postcard with a rare, high-altitude seal. Given the extreme elevation—consistently exceeding 14,000 feet—be sure to prioritize acclimatization by staying hydrated, moving slowly to avoid altitude sickness, and carrying a heavy jacket to stay comfortable against the sharp mountain winds, all while ensuring you return to Kaza by evening to rest and properly manage the physical demands of this high-altitude adventure.

Day 6: Kaza - Key-Kibber - Chicham Bridge - Chandratal

Depart from Kaza early to make the most of the day as you travel toward the high-altitude wilderness. Your first stop is the iconic Key Gompa (Key Monastery), a stunning, multi-tiered structure perched dramatically on a hilltop, serving as both a spiritual sanctuary and a visual marvel against the stark Spiti mountains. Continue upward to the high-altitude village of Kibber, once known as one of the highest villages in the world, before crossing the vertigo-inducing Chicham Bridge, which spans a deep gorge and offers some of the most thrilling views in the valley. Conclude your journey by driving to the breathtaking Chandra Taal, a mesmerizing crescent-shaped alpine lake famed for its changing turquoise waters, where you can spend the evening soaking in the surreal, serene landscape of the high Himalayas.

As you head toward the lake, remember that this route involves remote, rugged terrain and high elevations, so ensure you have sufficient fuel, water, and emergency supplies, and consider checking the current status of the Kunzum Pass before you set out.

Day 7: Chandratal to Manali

This final leg of your journey involves navigating the rugged, high-altitude terrain of the Lahaul and Spiti region to return to the lush greenery of the Kullu Valley. Since you will be departing from —which sits at over 14,000 feet—expect a full day of driving (approximately 7–9 hours) despite the relatively short distance.

Day 8: Manali Leisure Day & Departure

After the intense, high-altitude expedition through the Spiti Valley, Day 8 is all about transitioning from the raw, arid mountain terrain back to civilization. Since you are already in Manali, use this day to recover, handle logistics, and soak in the comfort of the lower altitudes before your final departure.
